The Photonics and Optoelectronics Network PHOENIX+ is a networking partnership of the Photonics Cluster Berlin by Fraunhofer HHI, Fraunhofer IPK, Berlin Partner for Business and Technology and the OpTecBB e. V. The engagement is in close cooperation with partner organizations from science and industry in the partner regions.
As a tool for internationalisation within the Photonics Cluster, the project team made it to their business to promote the startup of an economy focused and transnational network in research and development between all partners in Berlin and the partner regions in Poland, Japan, Brazil and the United States of America in the field of optics and photonics.
The central service of PHOENIX+ consists of bringing together companies and research institutions from Berlin-Brandenburg and the respective partner regions for networking purposes. Besides supporting them in applying for funding, they provide ongoing information on new calls for proposals, such as those issued by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which could be of interest to the international network.
Cooperation with Poland, Japan, Brazil and the USA
Since the network was established in 2013, cooperation with neighbouring Poland has proved to be particularly promising. After the first two calls, the cooperation projects initiated by PHOENIX between Poland and the capital region were also successful in the BMBF's third call for proposals with the focus on "Photonics for Digitisation".
In June 2018, the Senate for Economics, Energy and Business (SenWEB), together with the Foundation for Support of Research and Innovation, Santa Catarina - Brazil (FAPESC), published the first call for R&D cooperation. The funding of the Berlin partners was provided within the framework of the Programme for the Promotion of Research, Innovations and Technologies (ProFIT). The FAPESC provided its own funding instrument for the Brazilian part of the consortium.
