The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut fuer Hoechstfrequenztechnik (FBH) researches electronic and optical components, modules and systems based on compound semiconductors. These devices are key enablers that address the needs of today’s society in fields like communications, energy, health and mobility. Specifically, FBH develops light sources from the visible to the ultra-violet spectral range: high-power diode lasers with excellent beam quality, UV light sources and hybrid laser systems. Applications range from medical technology, high-precision metrology and sensors to optical communications in space. In the field of microwaves, FBH develops high-efficiency multi-functional power amplifiers and millimeter wave frontends targeting energy-efficient mobile communications as well as car safety systems. In addition, compact atmospheric microwave plasma sources are devellopped for medical applications or surface coating.

The FBH is a competence center for III-V compound semiconductors and has a strong international reputation. FBH competence covers the full range of capabilities, from design to fabrication to device characterization.

In close cooperation with industry, its research results lead to cutting-edge products. The institute also successfully turns innovative product ideas into spin-off companies. Thus, working in strategic partnerships with industry, FBH assures Germany’s technological excellence in microwave and optoelectronic research.

Toptica Eagleyard Photonics develops and manufactures high power laser diodes – the key components for next generation laser systems. These high power laser diodes are produced in close cooperation with the renowned Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik and represent reliable product results of top research performances. Since its foundation in 2002, eagleyard Photonics, a highly innovative and rapidly growing company has become a leading provider of high power laser diodes with wavelengths ranging from 630 to 1120 nm. Customers worldwide integrate laser diodes “made by eagleyard” into their systems. The certified development, production and marketing processes are subject to rigorous quality standards required by ISO 9001:2008.

The development of space qualified laser diodes for missions like Gaia and Merlin during the past few years enhanced our knowledge about robust and sustainable designs of laser diodes.

Fraunhofer HHI erforscht und entwickelt Photonische Komponenten und Übertragungssysteme, faseroptische Sensoren, Mobilfunk, und Videokodierung. Mit unseren 300 festen und etwa 200 studentischen Mitarbeitern arbeiten wir daran, das kontinuierliche Wachstum des Datenverkehrs im Internet zu ermöglichen und entwickeln neue Sensortechnologien für unterschiedliche Anwendungen. Mit unserer langen Geschichte in der Forschung ist heutzutage jeder Mensch in Kontakt – ohne es zu wissen – mit unseren Technologien: Jedes zweite im Internet transportierte Bit ist ein H.264 oder H.265 komprimiertes Video. HHI hat diese Standards, die auf etwa 2 Mrd. Geräten installiert sind, maßgeblich mitentwickelt. Auch etwa jedes zweite im Internet transportierte Bit berührt eine unserer Photonischen Komponenten, die als optoelektronische Konverter in den Knoten des Internet installiert sind.

Since 1992, APE is passionately supporting customers to get the best out of their ultrafast lasers, applications, and processes. That is why we develop and produce devices for our customers to measure, modify and improve their ultrafast laser solutions.

Our product portfolio includes optical parametric oscillators (OPOs), optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs), and systems for harmonic generation (HarmoniXX series). Our ultrashort pulse diagnostics line covers autocorrelators for pulse width measurements, spectrometers, and other equipment for measuring and characterizing femtosecond and picosecond laser pulses.
